Visual Arts Intensive Workshop

Students in Years 10 and 11 will have the exciting opportunity to learn from renowned Australian artist Ky Smith, a finalist and winner of the People’s Choice Award in the prestigious Portia Geach Memorial Award, whose work focuses on identity and atelier approaches to portraiture.

This Visual Arts intensive offers hands-on learning and creative inspiration:

Year 10 Session (8:40-11:00am): Students will be introduced to Ky’s practice and engage in a guided oil painting workshop. They will experiment with proportion, structure, and mark-making, developing a series of studies that explore traditional painting techniques. They will focus on portraiture, exploring composition, expression, and technique to bring personality and depth to the human face.

Year 11 Session (11:20-3:00pm): Students will take part in an intensive artmaking session, focusing on the development of a body of work. This practical experience will extend their own body of work and deepen their understanding of traditional techniques as they embark on their own works. Students will develop their painting skills, with guidance from a professional artist to refine technical ability and strengthen conceptual approaches to body of work projects. They will apply techniques in layering, colour mixing, and composition to produce a resolved painting study.

This is an incredible opportunity for students to extend their artistic practice, gain professional insight, and engage directly with a practicing artist working at an international level.

The incursion will occur as part of the school day for students, thus food, uniform and transport will remain as normal.
